GN 5018 and 5019 were 5000 hp 2-D+D-2 electrics built
by GE in 1947. At 735,000 lbs. each, they were the largest
electric locomotives ever built in America. They were used
on the electrified portion of the railroad between Wenatchee
and Skykomish, WA, through the Cascade Tunnel.
Both units were retired in 1956 when GN’s electrified
system was switched off and Diesel locomotives took over
operations. #5019 was scrapped in 1959. #5018 was sold
to the Union Pacific, which used its body and running gear
as part of the experimental coal burning turbine-electric
locomotive #80.
