Massachusetts Senator George F. Hoar wrote this letter from Worchester, Massachusetts in 1886. It accompanied a check for $20, which he asked the recipient to give to a woman.
Autograph letter signed \"Geo F. Hoar\". Typed notations on page 2. 2 pages, 5x8, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. Worchester, Massachusetts, Dec. 1, 1886. In full: \"My dear Mr Woodward If you pay the Enclosed check [not included] for twenty dollars to the lady who [illegible] it without [illegible] her to be identified, I will notify the transaction when I come in Yrs truly\". Hoar (1826-1904), who served as a U. S. Representative (1869-1877) and Senator (1877-1904) from Massachusetts, was one of the 15 members of the Electoral Commission appointed by the Congress to decide the outcome of the Nov. 7, 1876 presidential election between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden. That year, he was also one of the managers appointed to conduct impeachment proceedings against ex-Secretary of War, William W. Belknap. An organizer of the Republican Party in his home state, Hoar was also the author of the Presidential Succession Act of 1886, the 1887 bill that repealed the Tenure of Office Act and much of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act (1890). Following the Spanish-American War, he became a leading opponent of imperialism, speaking out before the 1900 election on the dangers of the U.S. becoming involved in the world-wide political arena. Lightly soiled. Show through from typed notations touches handwriting but not signature. Handwriting, but not signature, is lightly spotted but legible. Random ink stains.
