Garyis a city inLake County, Indiana,historically dominated by major industrial activity. The city is locatedalong the southern shore ofLake Michiganabout 25 miles from downtownChicago,Illinois.Itwasfounded in 1906 by theUnited States Steel Corporationas thehome for its new plant, “GaryWorks”. The city wasnamed after lawyerElbert Henry Gary, who was the founding chairmanof theUnited States Steel Corporation.Gary’sfortuneshave risen and fallen with those of the steel industry. The growth of thesteel industry brought prosperity to the community and the decline of the steelindustry the opposite. Broadway runs north/south and wasknown as a commercial center for the region, separating downtownGaryintotwo distinctive communities.The “West Side” (west ofBroadway) contained the downtownretail stores such as “J.C. Pennys”, taller and larger commercialbuildings, including the “Gary National Bank Building” and the “TivoliTheater” (which is now demolished), but also was known for its masonry orbrick residences.The West Side was viewed as having wealthierresidents and houses dated from about 1900 to the 1930s, with much of the housing built for executives of U.S. Steel. This card, published by the “Tribeof K”, a furniture and stationary store serving Gary in the early1900s and chronicles “Broadway at 7thlooking North (toward 5th),Gary Ind. “The Steel City”” It is a white border era card (1915-30) andis in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image of a busy streetwith era autos and great signs. Thereverse is also clean.
