You are purchasing aWOVEN REPLICA ribbon for a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) or Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic (FCL) medals.

THIS IS NOT AN ORIGINAL ISSUE RIBBON, but the finestquality replacement ribbon you will find anywhere!

These ribbons are appx7/8" (22mm) wide and 3 3/4" (95mm) long, in response to customer response, these are slightly shorter then those offered in the past.

Unlike EMBROIDERED ribbons created with a single needle, these WOVEN ribbons are created using 4 needles and each end is sealed so they will not fray like others I've seen offered for sale. And if you are concerned abouthistoric accuracy, this ribbon is extremely detailed, right down to the blue field intersecting the 1st red stripe; which is something we are unaccustomed to seeing in U.S. Flags. In addition, theblue field is woven on the LEFT SIDE, which is the proper way the U.S. Flag is to be displayed and the only way to position this ribbonwhen hanging the GAR Star. In existence between 1866 and 1949, at its peak the GAR counted 409,489 members. Since most GAR & FCL membership medals now exceed 100 years of age, the original cloth ribbons, even those few that survive intact, deteriorate each time they are touched or exposed to the elements, and are especially susceptible to fading from the sun or harsh incandescent lighting. So, surviving membership medals in good condition are increasingly rare, especially where the original cloth ribbon is concerned.

Through removing and properly storing your medal’s original issue ribbon, you can now wear or display your cherished keepsake while protecting its value for generations yet to come.

"WHY DOESN'T THE RIBBON FIT THE STAR?" That's a good question. Back when the Type III medal was first introduced, the star was much larger, so the ribbon fit easily between the "uprights" on the star. However, since the medal looked so much like the Congressional Medal of Honor, they changed the eagle and made the star smaller. However, so that the eagle did not slide back and forth along the ribbon, the kept the attachment bar on the back the same width, but the "uprights" of the star on the regular membership medal were now more narrow. Therefor, the ribbon must be compressed to fit the opening.
