Scarce early original vintage cabinet card photograph of notable New York Supreme Court Judge G. J. Garrettson.Garret James Garretson was born at Newtown, Long Island, on the l6th day of July, 1847.
Judge Garretson received an academic education at the Flushing Institute, on Long Island, and having chosen the law for his profession, studied with the prominent New York firm of Marvin & Daniel, and was admitted to practice at the Bar in December, 1869, since which time he has actively pursued his profession in New York City and Queens County, when not serving as a Judge on the Bench. In 1877 Judge Garretson formed a partnership with Henry W. Eastman, a well-known member of the Bar of the city, practicing under the firm name of Eastman & Garretson.In June, 1896, Judge Garretson was appointed by Governor Morton to be one of the Commissioners to frame and report to the Legislature of the State a charter for the government of the consolidated cities now known as the \"Greater New York.\" In November, 1896, he was elected a Justice of the Supreme Court for the Second Judicial District of the State, and has since filled the office with all the ability, honor and dignity which characterized his conduct of the affairs of the minor courts over which he has presided.Cabinet Card photograph measures 4 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches and is in very good condition with only light surface wear (see scan).
