Original spike bayonet for MAS 36 CR39 paratrooper rifle. This example has the early design horizontal knurling on the grip as opposed to the later diagonal design. It has the 1951 modification of the 4mm hole behind the locking tabto release the \"French Finger Trap\" situationwhere 2 rifles could be joined together by soldiers playing around. It has the later phosphate finish. The overall length is 15.12 inches to accommodate the shorter barrel and stock of the CR39 rather than the standard 17 inch version for the MAS 36/51, but will also fit in the standard rifle. This example is unmarked as many were with eleven or more different manufacturers making them for St Etienne.

Only approximately 35,000 of the CR39s were made, making this a rather scarce bayonet. These rifles saw extensive use in Indochina and Algeria. The few early pre-war production versions saw limited use with mountain troops. A nice item to complete your rifle or for a collection for WW2 French items.
