Classic Laguiole Le Fidle (The Dog) Folding Pocketknife with Wooden Handle and Natural Full Grain Leather Sheath. Made by the famous French knifemaker Laguiole. Laguiole knives are considered to be some of the most beautiful knives in the world and this specimen is no exception. This knife was manufactured in 2018, but is LIKE NEW--never used or carried. The blade is approx. 3 3/4 inches long. The 12C27 mark means that the knife is their most popular 12 cm model and uses high-end Sandvik stainless steel. The handle is African Ebony. Current 2024 prices for brand new knives like this one can be as high as $300. Always look closely at the specific design of any Laguiole knife as they come in many different variations. This is one of their more elaborate models and includes their famous Christian Cross motif on one side only. Legand has it that shepheards would stab the knife into their food and pray to the cross each evening for Devine blessings.
It was in 1829 that a modest peasant knife was born in Laguiole, a small mountain village in Aveyron, France. The design was based on a mixture of the Navaja knife with an Arab-Hispanic shape and the local knife of the time, the Capouchadou. The basic design was created by a 16-year-old villager named Pierre-Jean Calmels and his uncle, Bemon, a local locksmith. After making several changes, the final now-iconic design was established in 1850. Legend has it that the bee symbol, which adorns each knife, was authorized by Napoleon, as a reward for their bravery. Laguiole knives are still hand-made by artisans in Aveyron today.
