France: Lot of Five French Patriotic Medals for the CrimeanWar 1854-1856. Five scarce bronze patriotic medals commemorating Frenchparticipation in the Crimean War. France and Great Britain declared war onRussia on March 28, 1854, joining the Ottoman Empire. Russia, Great Britain, Sardinia and Turkey all issued campaign medals for the Crimean War, but France did not; these unofficial medals come close:1) Silvered 24 mm bronze medal with an obverseof Napoleon III, and a reverse featuring an allegorical winged figure holding aflag before a defeated, prostrate enemy.The exergue of the medal is dated 1854 in Roman numerals; most of thesilver gilt is gone, but still in near extremely fine condition; on areplacement ribbon of the French national colors. 2) Bronze 23 mm bronze medalwith an obverse of Marshal Aimable Pélissier, commander-in-chief of the Frencharmy in the Crimea. The reverse depicts the French storming of the Malakoff, akey Russian redoubt in Sebastopol, on September 8, 1854. The capture of theMalakoff resulted in the surrender of Sebastopol a day later, September 9th.The medal is in extremely fine condition, and is on a very old red ribbon. 3) Bronze23 mm bronze medal with an obverse of Napoleon III, maker-marked, “Robineau RueS Louis101.” The reverse inscription celebrates the fall of Sebastopol; on areplacement ribbon of the French national colors. 4) Bronze 23 mm bronze medalwith an obverse of Napoleon III, with a reverse commemorating the Paris PeaceTreaty of March 30, 1856, which ended the Crimean War. The medal is in nearextremely fine condition, on a replacement ribbon of the French nationalcolors. 5) Bronze 23 mm bronze medal with an obverse of Napoleon III. The reverse celebrates the French capture of the Malakoff, the fall of Sebastopol on September 9thand the brave Allied armies; the medal is in near extremely fine condition.
