The lowering of thesymmetry from typical (forcancrinitegroup) hexagonal one is due toordering of Si and Al.It has aMohs hardnessof 5.5 to 6 andaspecific gravityof 2.55 to 2.65. It hasrefractiveindexvalues of nω=1.523 and nε=1.529. It has one direction of perfectcleavage and exhibits conchoidal fracture.Itfluorescesabright orange.
