A great example of a German small sword, 1st half of the 18th century. Brass hilt with a spherical pommel, handle and asymmetrical kidney-shaped guard plate, mounted for a left-handed individual. Bulbous grip with well-preserved copper wire winding between copper ferrules. Blade of hexagonal cross-section with short fullers on either side. Stamped into it three times "IHS" (Iesus Hominum Salvator/Jesus Savior of the people). Length is 40.5”. Sword displays the signs of age and of use mainly towards the tip, which adds to the originality and history of the object. The hilt displays some very light play in the pommel and guard.
