Fine 1912 English Sterling & Cut Glass Acanthus Leaf Inkwell Stand :
$1288.80

Presented is a decorative, English sterling silver inkwell stand made by Hukin & Heath of Birmingham in 1912. The rim of the stand is done in a highly raised, acanthus leaf and shell design. There is a long, shallow well at the front of the stand for your pens. The tray is raised on four ornate, leaf form feet. The center has a raised, square holder for the cut glass inkwell, which is original to the stand. The sterling lid of the glass inkwell is beautifully engraved with a fine elk crest surrounded by great machine turnings. The sterling silver threaded collar and lid of the glass inkwell are not original, they are replacements but they look great with the piece as a whole. The sterling collar and lid were made in 1891 by Charles & George Asprey of London.

The stand and raised holder are marked with the lion passant for sterling silver, a date letter n for 1912 and a maker’s mark for Hukin & Heath Ltd. The underside of the stand is marked with the anchor symbol for Birmingham. The collar of the glass inkwell and the lid are marked with the leopard’s head for London, the lion passant for sterling silver, a date letter Q for the year 1891 and a maker’s mark for Charles & George Asprey.

This piece is in excellent overall condition. As mentioned above, the sterling collar on the glass inkwell and its lid are replacements, but they match the whole piece wonderfully. The glass inkwell has two smoothed chips on its bottom corners, but they are completely hidden when it is placed into the sterling holder of the stand. There are no dents, no breaks, no splits, no monograms, no monogram removals and no other repairs.

The stand measures 6 1/4 by 9 1/4 inches and without the glass inkwell it weighs 378 grams or 13.3 ounces.
