Farmer Fred Postcard Monroe Street Bridge Monroe MI from shore 1879 bridge:
$5.15

This postcard features the historic Monroe Street Bridge in Monroe, Michigan, with Farmer Fred as the featured person. The bridge was built in 1879 and is depicted from the shore in this printed (lithograph) postcard. The card is standard size (5.5 x 3.5 in) and has a divided back, dating it between 1907-1915. The postcard is in unposted condition and was published by Farmer Fred Battle Creek. It is a great addition to any collection of topographical postcards, and a reminder of the beauty and history of Monroe and Michigan.
Farmer Fred was a promoter from Battle Creek and was active in early photography and post card production in Michigan. The card was printed for him in Germany from one of his photos. I must say it is a rather unique view of the structure
The Monroe Street Bridge pictured on the card was constructed in the late 1870\'s and was 22\' wide with a trolley car rail running down the middle.Carl Fisher who made a fortune in the automotive headlamp business, began development of Miami Beach and proposed a highway, the Dixie Highway, the eastern portion of which would run from Sault Ste Marie Mi to Savannah and down the east coast of Florida to Miami. The town fathers of Monroe wanted the Dixie Highway to run through Monroe and needed a wider bridge. The bridge shown was replaced by a modern, for the time, concrete bridge, which still exists, in 1929. Just in time for the hurricane which messed up Florida real estate and started the great depression. By the way Carl Fisher was worth fifty to a hundred million in 1925. The hurricanes made him a pauper.
Can\'t get too much more history in one postcard.
The card was written but is unposted. It has some age toning but is in good condition for its age.
