The Mountain Division is a railroad line that was once owned and operated by the Maine Central Railroad that stretches from Portland Maine on the Atlantic Ocean, through the Western Maine Mountains and White Mountains of New Hampshire, ending at St Johnsbury, Vermont. The goal was to connect the coast with the Great Lakes, but it was initially built to provide transportation for summer visitors to Sebago Lake and the grand Victorian hotels in the White Mountains. To construct a railroad through the rugged terrain of Crawford Notch in the late 1800s was a remarkable achievement and many people at the time said it was an impossible engineering feat. wikipedia Frankenstein Trestle crosses the great Frankenstein Gulf, spanning a crevasse of 500 feet from cliff to cliff at a height of 80 feet above the chasm. It was completed in June of 1875 and the first excursion train crossed it on June 29th. A week later, construction crews who had been working from the western end of the line reached the summit of the Notch. On August 7th, a special train from Portland, filled with officials and press, ran all the way through the Notch and just after noon, the ceremonial last spike was driven. The first trestle was quite small and narrow and described as “spindly” and in 1892 a new wrought iron trestle with concrete abutments was constructed to accommodate heavier locomotives and trains.
This is a nice card, published by “J.V. Hartmann” who was a photographer that published his images of New England as monochromes and color views between 1910 and 1920. My source gives Boston as his base but the logo on the back of the cards indicates “From the Mountain Pines of Maine to the Sunny Sands of Florida”. It is was printed earlier but was postmarked 1930, Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The card is in good condition with minor creasing on the corners and intact edges. The image is clean and clear as is the reverse.
If this your card, it will be mailed promptly upon receipt of payment...... Free Shipping World Wide. Thank you for your interest and I hope that I can help you with your collection.....
