- Surrounding Building Context:The founding of the community was based on the establishment of grist and saw mill sites on the Saugeen River, and commercial support for the surrounding agricultural area. The arrival of the railway in 1882 allowed for the community to become a significant regional manufacturer of furniture. Several large multi-storey brick plants were constructed in close proximity to the station, served by spur lines (see map for details). Railway uses near the station included a small yard, stock pens, coal sheds, and a detached freight shed. To the north, the railway crossed over the Saugeen River valley on a high bridge (now converted into a walking trail).
