FINEST ANTIQUE GILT BRONZE FRENCH MANTEL CLOCK BY CLAUDE GALLE (1757-1815) OF NEOCLASSICAL DESIGN CIRCA 1790-1800. Gilt bronze, milestone-shaped case with semi-circular top, decorated with lyre in bas-relief on a stepped-back base decorated with floral relief accents, rosettes, and scrolling foliage, set on claw feet. Manufactured by Claude Galle, French bronzier. Face marked: "GALLE, Rue Vineene No. 9". Approximately 19" high x 10" wide by 6" deep. GALLE was one of the most renowned bronziers, active during the Napoleonic Period. He supplied both the royal household before the revolution and the Imperial household. His works are in the Dutch Royal Collection and at Peterhof Saint-Petersburg and in the Throne Room, Royal Collection, Buckingham Palace. A unique feature of the clock is the bezel encircling the dial which depicts a serpent with it tail in its mouth, representing a circle, never ending, never beginning, infinity, and the cycles of the sun. It is rare to find a GALLE clock with an understated design such as this, without gold statuettes or cherubs, etc. It is a more understated "modern" neoclassical design, with more appeal to current modern sophisticated tastes.Note: The dial is slightly turned out of vertical in the first photo. The dial and bezel are now adjusted properly as seen in the other close-up photos. The clock is in excellent condition but is not in working order at this time because of a broken thread that holds the pendulum. It has typical movement of that era so that any qualified shop could bring it to life.
