This is a pocket watch size gambling device that appears to be astandard size pocket watch with a dial but with a single hand, a stem, and awatch chain top ring. These devices are made with different faces for differentgambling games. However, most are designed as a pocket gambling piece for aSporting Gent or Lady to offer a spontaneous game of chance to his / hercompanion(s) anytime, anywhere, such as at a gambling hall, barroom, saloon ortavern, casino, leisure, or sporting event, perhaps for a drink or round ofdrinks. This watch face has a thin smooth clear coating over a printed dial andremains in fine condition with bright colors. Note that all examples of thismodel have a light center panel impression of the moniker, “Sometimes I dreamas many as 6 impossible things before breakfast”. The dial has an outsideborder with 12 different playing cards from a 2 of diamonds to an ace ofspades. 12 of the 13 cards in a suite of playing cards are represented, butwithout a King. As the numbers progress, each of the 4 suits are repeated,i.e., diamonds, clubs, hearts, and spades.

The domed watch crown is clear plastic with light surface pocket wear.These devices vary slightly in features, and most have a very simple in designand application, i.e., you wind the stem, and the single hand rotates and willstop on its own, with revolution speed and the number of full dial spinsdepending on how many times you wind the stem. The hand begins to turn as soonas the stem is wound, and usually a couple of turns will make the hand rotate acouple of times. The more you wind the stem, the faster it rotates and thelonger the time until the hand comes to rest for the results. The stem can bewound several times (2 - 4 is fine); anymore and you could possibly overwindthe spring. Some of these pieces have slightly different mechanisms affected bythe stem. This piece has a stem that when pushed will stop the moving hand;when released, the hand resumes rotating. Withmultiple players, each one would get to spin the hand and the highest card wins,with a tie requiring a runoff. With two players, the better could also declareeither black or red color as the winning color or specify a suite of cards, etal. Theoretically, this could also be used with a layout for multiple bettors.

These devices were made in Germany, and I believe date to around the1950’s – 60’s. The base metal is usually plain and nickel-plated brass or steel,and the rim of the back side bottom cover plate has a shallow ding with tinyscrape marks that do not affect the mechanism and are not distracting to theoverall fine condition.
