FINE & RARE ANTIQUE MOTHER OF PEARL OBJECT D` ART SMALLMATCHSAFE

WITH SILVER 3-D SILVER ESCUTCHEON, RED CHECKERED LEATHERINTERIOR

AND ACCORDIAN STYLE EXPANDING GUSSETS ~ CIRCA 1860’s – 80’s

This is a fine & early antiqueMother of pearl pocket match safe with both the front and back sides havingfine, thin Mother of Pearl panels, accordion style expanding gussets on allsides, red checkered leather interior, and a heavy-duty steel frame. In the mid to late1800s, nearly all men (and some women)used tobacco of some sort. At this time men were smoking loose tobacco in pipes, cigarettes, cigars, and long thincigars called cheroots was a favorite with gentleman and quite in vogue. By thelate 1800’s some women were smoking cigarettes.

Match safes come in a widevariety of sizes, shapes, materials, and craftsmanship; created to safely carryhighly combustible strike anywhere matches in a pocket carrying case. Thisearly and eye-appealing piece is 2 11/16\" tall x 1 3/8” wide X 5/8” thickand weighs 1.3 ounces or 37 grams. The heavy-duty frame is made from steel in aclamshell design, much like the much larger cigar cases. The inside frames havenaturally occurred aged patina (rust) that has been left in untouched condition. Both sides of the interior are beautifully lined with red cross hatched leatherbackground with a leather covered frame held in place by a steel frame that isriveted from the front with 6 tiny rivets. There are two expandable red crosshatched leather pouches with gussets(don’t pull on them) to secure the matches, with one having a small black pieceof emery cloth for striking the matches. The closing mechanism works perfectly. The two half shells align perfectly and closes tightly with a smallspring-loaded latch on the side that needs to be pushed in all the way. Donot pull on the pearl panels to open! The tight-fitting frame halves can beseparated with your fingernails but pulling on the delicate pearl panels couldcrack them or tear the intact gussets. To close, do not press on the pearlscales! Press in the side button, close the halves, and release the button. These handmade Object D `Art Match safes with delicate Mother of Pearl panelswere custom made by hand in limited quantities by skilled Artisans. The styleand quality Craftsmanship suggest this piece was made during the 3rdquarter of the 1800’s Victorian period and intended for well to do Gentleman orLady. It also should be mentioned that the Mother of Pearl was from the unpollutedoceans at this time, and have an iridescence not found in modern pearl. Althoughpearl was plentiful at this time, it was still obtained by free divers thatwere limited in depth and was an extremely dangerous profession with a shortlifespan. This piece has features that demonstrate the artistic license andattention to detail of Master Craftsmen; finely & painstakingly all finelycreated with remarkable precision and attention to detail. It is apparent thispiece was a collaboration of steel workers, leather crafters, pearl cutters andsilver Artisans and fitters; all made with considerable skills. Just cuttingand polishing the Mother of pearl panels without shattering the thin, delicatepieces required an accomplished Artisan, and these panels are still intact withno chips or cracks. Both sides have near paper thin Pearl panels with accordionstyle expanding leather gussets on all sides. These delicate thin leathergussets are usually torn or ripped. Remarkably, all 4 sides of both halves havethe pearl and gussets intact. There is no reason to manually expand the gussetsand risk tearing or damaging them. As expectedwith all-natural material, glue shrinks slightly over time, including the glueused for adhering the shell panels to the leather. This creates a few thinareas of separation of the pearl panels and the leather gussets visible atthe edges, but the shell pieces are solid and secured to the leathergussets. Overall, the panels are in fine+ condition with iridescent colors tothe pearl, especially the front panel. There is a stylized cast silver veryfancy Victorian style escutcheon plate on the front panel that is uninscribed.

This is a charming, elegant, delicate piece of hand-crafted Folk Art in remarkable condition for its age. Ofcourse, if dropped once, it would shatter and be destroyed. This piece is in finecondition overall with light usage; and appears to have been \"put up\"long ago and is in untouched as found condition. This eye appealing Object D`Art matchsafe would be perfect for any Folk Art, Victorian, Match safe, cigar /cheroot cutter. decorator, desk accessory or conversation piece or gift.
