This is a pocket watch size gamblingdevice that appears to be a standard size pocket watch with a dial but with asingle hand, a stem, and a watch chain top ring. These devices are made withdifferent faces for different gambling games, however all are designed as apocket gambling piece for a Sporting Gent or Lady to offer a spontaneous gameof chance to his / her companion(s) anytime, anywhere, such as at a gamblinghall, barroom, saloon or tavern, casino, dog / horse racing orsporting event, for leisure, or perhaps for a drink or round ofdrinks. The domed watch crown is clear plastic with light surface scratches. Thedial face appears to be a typical watch face but has an image printed on thedial with a thin clear coating applied. Note it is nearly impossible tophotograph a curved reflective surface and usually images have to be taken indark light and or at angles to minimize the reflections. This particular watchdome reflects light and makes color variances to appear, but the dialbackground is solid dark green, and the multicolored horses have bright colors,and all is in fine condition. The dial has segmented pie shapes with 8 differentracehorses, 2 large pie shaped segments and 6 smaller pie shaped segments in varyingsizes; each with a named horse and their pay out odds. There is an outside thinborder in red. The horse names and odd are printed in very small black lettersand numbers on a dark green background but can easily be read withmagnification. The payouts range from 3 to 1 to 10 to 1. The center has a 50 / 50betting option choosing red or black with even odds.

These devices vary slightly in features,and most have a very simple in design and application, i.e., you wind the stem,and the single hand rotates and will stop on its own, with revolution speed andthe number of full dial spins depending on how many times you wind the stem.The hand begins to turn as soon as the stem is wound, and usually a couple ofturns will make the hand rotate a couple of times. The more you wind the stem,the faster it rotates and the longer the time until the hand comes to rest forthe dog race results. The stem can be wound several times (2 - 4 is fine);anymore and you could possibly overwind the spring. Some of these pieces haveslightly different mechanisms affected by the stem. This piece has a stem thatwhen pushed while the hand is moving, will stop the hand. When the stem isreleased, the hand continues to rotate. With multiple players, each one wouldget to spin the hand with payouts for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, i.e., win,show or place finishers, and perhaps automatic wins for the 10 to 1 horse. Theoretically,this gambling device could also be used with a layout for multiple bettors.

Overall, in fine condition with light scratchesof pocket wear to the center back shiny cover plate. These devices were mostly madein Germany, and I believe date to around the 1950’s – 60’s.
