First side of the strop features 9oz European veg tan cowhide leather that is flesh or fuzzy side up, this is a grade A defect free leather that has a very short nap and has been loaded with 50K + grit pure chromium oxide bar compound. Removes minimal metal (slow cutting) and leaves a razor sharp edge.The second side features a special leather, it\'s hard or wet rolled equine / horse hide 10+ oz in thickness. This has undergone an additional step at the tannery where it is rolled while damp, this firms the leather even more and also migrates the natural abrasive in the hide (silica/silicates) to the surface making it even more effective and slightly faster. In my opinion this extra firm temper hide is the best bare hide you can get for finishing your edges on.You can use either side alone or together in conjunction with each other. For best results I recommend first stropping on the cowhide side that comes pre-loaded with the .5 micron chromium oxide bar compound then wipe blade clean and finish on bare hide for blistering sharp edges.When stropping you can go heel to tip, tip to heel or straight away doesn\'t matter (but never into the edge / edge leading). To find the correct angle lay the knife flat on the leather then slowly lift the spine of the knife until the gap between the leather and the edge/apex of the knife disappears (this is the correct angle). I recommend using very light force while stropping around 12oz or less or approx. the weight of your hand with the knife in it and let the abrasives do the work, this will normally lead to the sharpest edges.• Both sides of the handle are leveled perfectly flat before hide is attached• Approx size: 14.5\"L x 2\"W
