Guillemot State : Good Set of three letters from Lamennais (one signed and two initialed) and one autograph piece. - 2 autograph letters initialed, addressed to Hippolyte Romand (1808-1877), doctor and playwright, editor of serials in the Lamennais newspaper. About a disastrous financial affair: “[…] This poor M. [Mathieu] completed my ruin. I am far from reproaching him for it; only I regret the lack of ease that so painfully I thought I was preparing for my old age […]”. He asks his correspondent to forward a letter to this Mathieu, and adds: “A year ago I let myself go to a legitimist to get him out of an extreme embarrassment. It is still as if I had thrown them into the river”. And adds the address of the famous Mathieu, in London: 30 Weymouth Street, Portland Place.

He asks for news of the Verberie affair, a village in the Oise where he wanted to buy a small property: \"[...] The owner, as soon as he knew that we were thinking of buying his house, declared that he no longer wanted to sell it, unless at the same time they bought some bad wood valued by him at an unreasonable price […]”. “From extravagance to extravagance” he does not want to follow the owner on this “road”. Pressed for time, Lamennais wants to know if he can hope to be able to deal with this seller all the same.
