Akhenaten (also spelled Akhenaten; meaning "living spirit of Aten") was also known before the fifth year of his reign as Amenhotep IV. He was a pharaoh from the Eighteenth Dynasty who ruled Egypt for 17 years and died perhaps in 1336 BC or 1334 BC. He is best known for abandoning traditional Egyptian polytheism and introducing a new cult centered on Aten, sometimes described as a monotheistic or henotheistic religion. Early inscriptions represented Aten with the sun, in comparison with the stars, and later the official language avoided calling Aten a god, giving him solar divinity a higher status than just being a god. As pharaoh, Akhenaten famously abandoned Egypt's traditional religion and introduced the Atenite religion, or worship centered around the Aten.
