From Paris, France (estimated 1870) from Samson Ceramics, comes this small but fascinating item, a lidded jar or urn 6 1/2\" tall, the form and painting of which is done in the armorial style of Chinese export porcelains of the 18th century. The central design is a multi-color overglaze enamel coat of arms, and there is a motto scroll that I can not read fully.

In terms of condition, the top had been broken off and was re-attached at some point. There is rubbing and loss to some of the gold gilding, especially the pull at the top. The bianco sopra bianco designs and scrolling are mostly in great shape, with a small bit of loss. The polychrome painting and the designs of the crest, the flowers, and in general appear in great antique condition.

It is 6 1/2\" tall, 3\" wide at its widest point, 2\" across at the base, and does not have any mark on the bottom (many of the Samson pieces of this era did not).

Edme Samson (1810-1891), founder of the porcelain company Samson, Edme et Cie (known as Samson Ceramics), was a famous copyist (and perhaps forger) of porcelain and pottery. The firm produced high-quality copies or imitations of earlier styles of porcelain, mainly 18th-century European, Chinese and Japanese porcelain, but also earlier styles such as Italian maiolica.
