Description Offered is a vintage early piece of Mexican folk art in the form of a polychromed clay figurine by the well-known artist Josefina Aguilar who lives in Ocotlán de Morelos, Oaxaca, Mexico. This is a fine example of her hybrid art that blends elements of elite and folk art.

This particular example is a market vendor with a fruit covered hat who is carrying a small child who appears to be eating an apple. There are seven types of fruit on her head and in her arm. She is wearing a long, pink dress. This early piece is signed on the inside of her skirt – “Josefina Aguilar”.

Josefina Aguilar, born in 1945, came to collector Nelson Rockefeller’s attention on a trip to Oaxaca in 1975, and she received wide acclaim when she won the first-place award at the Gran Premio de Arte Popular in 1977. Josefina lives in a compound in Ocotlán de Morelos with other members of her family who collect and prepare the clay, mold the figures, fire them in a primitive kiln in the compound, and finally add color with house paints. Every figure or tableau is different and may include multiple figures and accessories. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera are popular subjects.

Josefina is part of the Aguilar family known for its ceramic art. She is best known for her small clay figurines, called muñecas, an art form she learned from her mother Isaura Aguilar. Aguilar used red clay to create depictions of everyday village activities, religious and folkloric scenes, famous figures and special Day of the Dead statues.

Once the figures are modelled, they have to be fired in the oven for around nine hours. Then they are painted. Low-fired and highly colorful, clay figures by Josefina Aguilar and her extended family are characterizations of the people and historical figures that loom large in their native village in Oaxaca, Mexico. Most of the pieces created by the Aguilars focus on Mexican traditions and folklore — Frida Kahlo, Virgin de Guadalupe, Day of the Dead, scenes of the local market, ladies of the night, religious events or historical characters.

Josefina was unquestionably the greatest artist of the very talented Aguilar sisters, and had a very prolific career.  Unfortunately, Josefina is now blind and is no longer creating her own work.

Dimension/size – this piece stands about 6 ½” high. They weigh 8.4 ounces.

Condition – this is handmade clay figurine. As such, the smaller features are very easily broken. The top of the pineapple on her head has a small piece missing. Please see photos.

About Us

The Amazing Grace on store was opened to assist us in selling the rather extensive estate of a friend\'s mother that we have \"inherited\". Sally collected a variety of things for many years and 95% of the over 1,200 treasures have been in storage for the last 20 years or more. From depression glass to Asian porcelain and carvings to Native American turquiose & silver jewelry, Sally was a very accomplished collector and even had numerous reference books that accompanied her collections. We have since expanded to also sell other \"inherited\" collections as well as estate and garage sale finds.

We fully understand that in order to sell this vast estate we must offer excellent customer service and fair prices in order to earn repeat customers. Our goal is to make sure each and every customer has a positive buying experience and is completely satisfied. While not experts by any means, we will do our best to fully and accurately describe our offerings. We expend a great deal of effort in researching each piece to insure an accurate description and your satisfaction is our highest priority.
