EXTREMELY RARE 1874 PORTRAIT IN GLASS OF HENRY
WARD BEECHERABOLITIONIST MINISTER

Handblown in the mold. Inscribed in three places (see pics):

Front “BEECHER”; Back “JUNE 9, 1874”; Bottom “T.P. SPENCER & CO., N.Y.”

Measures: Height 7 inches Width 3 inches

Condition: About mint, with two fleabite nicks on lip, possibly occurred when original cork was removed.

Annealing marks on neck.

Henry Ward Beecher ( 1813-1887), born in Litchfield, Connecticut,

became a renowned abolitionist minister, and was able to change the minds of thousands

by using the New Testament to show that slavery was wrong. He described himself as “a peace-man,

except when I wish to fight.”

Beecher used a variety of ways to show his followers slavery was wrong. He would invite slaves on stage

and hold a mock slave sale until enough money was raised for their freedom. In 1856,

following the Nebraska-Kansas Act, Beecher raised money to buy rifles to send to Kansas anti-slavery settlers.

Beecher adamantly supported the Civil War and encouraged his followers to fight to end slavery.

Beecher was not the only one in his family to speak publicly against slavery.His sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe, wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
