Ephrata is a borough in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania,42 miles east of Harrisburg and about 60 miles west-northwest of Philadelphia. Royer Pharmacy is one of the oldest continuouslyoperating independent pharmacies in the United States. During its more than 140 years, it has beenoperated by only 2 primary families. ThePharmacy traces the beginning of its history to 1879 when a young pharmacist GeorgeS. Royer bought the business from a local pharmacist named Konigmacher, who he had learned his skills from. Royerrenamed the business “Royer’s Phamacy” and operated it for 55 yearsuntil his death in 1932. The store was originally located on the square at 2 E. Main St. At some time, the store was moved next doorto a large house at 8 E. Main St. Upon GeorgeRoyer’s death, his daughter Irene Weidman oversaw the operation of thebusiness. By 1939 she had constructedthe Royer Building and the pharmacy was moved into the new building at 2East Main St. The building is in the \"Art Moderne\" style, a late variation of the Art Deco Style, which wasfirst seen in 1925 into the 1940s, with horizontal lines and grooves therounded edges, corners, and windows, the use of glass block and the smoothexterior wall and subdued colors all elements of the Art Moderne style. The new building was built around the 8 E.Main Street Royer Pharmacy location. Thepharmacy continued to operate in the “old house” during construction. Therestill is an original brick wall of the 8 E building under the walls of the newbuilding. When Mrs. Weidman died in 1964, the business was sold to the storemanager, John Weidman, and the 2 staff pharmacists, William T.Sherman and Thomas E. Frontz. These three men incorporated the business 1964. The business is in the Sherman’sfamily control today. The card iscredited to the “Tecraft Co” who was a printer in Tenafly N.J. startingin 1876.
