Seeks federal funding for school desegregation in Boston.
Typed Letter signed: "Ted Kennedy", as U.S. Senator, 2 p, 8x10½. On official letterhead. Washington, D.C., 1975 September 9. To Dr. Herman Goldberg, Associate Commissioner for Equal Education Opportunity, Office of Education, Washington, D.C. In full: "Earlier this week I met with parents and teachers in Boston to discuss their concerns about school desegregation. One of their questions to me dealt with the use of federal education funds that have been allotted to the Boston School Department for implementation of the federal court order. They want to know not only about the availability of more money, but they are also seriously concerned about effective monitoring of those funds that the School Department has already received. I told them it was my understanding that you would be in Boston as a special representative of Secretary Matthews and that I would ask when you might be available to meet with them. In addition, Boston School Department officials have indicated to me their interest in meeting with you to explore the possibility of receiving funds in response to President Ford's announcement about federal assistance for effective implementation of the desegregation order. In this regard, I have asked Robert Bates in my office, to continue working with you and your staff to arrange for separate meetings in Boston with these groups. Mr. Bates will be in Boston during the opening days of school and can be reached in my Boston office on xxx-xxx-xxxx. As you know, I am anxious to cooperate with you on this matter in any way that I can. And I look forward to continuing to be in touch with you during the days and weeks ahead." The younger brother of President John F. Kennedy and the youngest son of Ambassador Joseph Kennedy, EDWARD "Teddy" KENNEDY (1932-2009) was first elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in 1962 to fill the seat vacated by his brother the President- serving until his death. Maturing from "kid brother" of the President into a national spokesman for liberal causes, he challenged incumbent President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination in 1980, but fell short. Beset by personal tragedies, some of his own making, Ted Kennedy remained an eloquent and important voice in the Senate and in his party. His son Patrick is a U.S. Representative from Rhode Island. Lightly creased. Paperclip impression in upper left. Horizontal fold underlines signature. Overall, fine condition.
