As a US Representative, he advises a woman\'s lawyer of the progress of her petition to Congress.
Autograph Letter signed: \"Edward Everett\" as US Representative, 2 pages, 7¾x9¾. Washington, 1827 January 15. To \"Geo. Morey Jnr. Esq.\", in full: \"Your favor of the 1st instant reached me on Monday the 8th, about an hour after the time was provided for presenting petitions that day. As the rules of the House assign Mondays exclusively for the presentation of petitions, after a certain period of the Session, it was impossible to offer Mrs. Stearns\' before today; for this reason I have delayed answering your letter till the present time. I consulted Mr. Webster & Mr. Whittelsey (a very judicious member of the Committee of Claims) as to the course proper to be pursued. They united in the opinion, that the Petition ought to be sent to the Committee on the Judiciary. I accordingly gave it that direction. The Committee will examine the case & if they so confer, report a bill authorizing the Secretary of the Navy to grant Mrs. Stearns\' claim. Meantime, however, it is the opinion of Mr. Webster that Mrs. Stearns has her remedy at Law, if she choose to avail herself of it. Supposing the facts as you state them, her right of domain in the three acres is unquestionable, & she may bring her action of [?] against Captain Crane or anyone who without a full title intrudes on her lands. As it would however probably be a matter of delay & expense to take this course and as the govt. will no doubt be disposed to do full justice, Mrs. Stearns\' friends will probably think it worthwhile to await (at least for a little while) the report of the Committee on the Judiciary of which Mr. Webster is the Chairman. Should anything further of moment occur in reference of the claims I will immediately apprize you of it. I am very truly yours\". Edward Everett (1794-1865) represented Massachusetts as a Whig in the House of Representatives (1825-1835) and in the U.S. Senate (1853-1854). He was Governor of Massachusetts (1836-1840), U. S. Minister to Great Britain (1841-1845), President of Harvard (1846-1849), President Millard Fillmore\'s Secretary of State (1852-1853) and the Constitution Union Party candidate for Vice President (with John Bell) in 1860, winning 39 electoral votes. In 1863, Everett shared the platform with President Lincoln at Gettysburg. Ordained a Unitarian Minister, Edward Everett was one of America\'s greatest orators. On Nov. 19, 1863, he was the keynote speaker at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery, where he delivered a two-hour oration. Everett\'s words, however, were eclipsed at the time and ever since by the brief closing remarks of President Lincoln\'s famous \"Gettysburg Address.\" A humbled Everett remarked to the President afterward, \"I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes.\" Multiple folds. Slightly toned. Light surface creases. Small stain on front. Small tear on bottom right fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
