Autograph Manuscript Signed: "From \'A Delicate Balance\'/by/Edward Albee (1981)", 1p, 8½x11. Headed: "Agnes:". In Full: "Time. Time happens, I suppose. To people. Everything becomes...too late, finally. You know its (sic) going on...up on the hill; you can see the door, and hear the [illegible], and see skel...but you wait; and time happens. When you do go, [two words illegible]...finally...there\'s nothing there...save rust; bones; and the wind." Beneath his signature, Albee has written: "requested by Charles Jackson, of Atlanta, Georgia." "Agnes" was a character in and the title of Act III of Albee\'s play, A Delicate Balance, which won the 1966 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play, which first ran on Broadway from September 22, 1966-January 14, 1967 at the Martin Beck Theatre, starred Jessica Tandy as Agnes. A Delicate Balance was nominated for nominated for 1967 Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Actor in a Play (Tandy\'s husband, Hume Cronyn as Tobias) and Best Actress (Rosemary Murphy as Claire). Marian Seldes won the Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Julia. A Delicate Balance was later revived on Broadway (April 21-September 29, 1996) at the Plymouth Theatre, this time with Rosemary Harris as Agnes. Again, the play was honored with Tony Awards: Best Revival of a Play; Best Actor in a Play (George Grizzard as Tobias) and Best Direction of a Play (Gerald Gutierrez). It was also nominated for Tonys for Best Actress in a Play (Rosemary Harris and Elaine Stritch for her portrayal of Claire), Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design. Three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward F. Albee (1928-2016) is best known for his 1962 masterpiece, Who\'s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? . The work, his first Broadway play, won him a Tony Award and was made into an award-winning film in 1966. He also won the 2002 Tony Award for Best Play for The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?. Albee is noteworthy in the theater not only for his works, but also for his efforts to introduce new talent and techniques. The playwright taught for many years at the School of Theatre at the University of Houston, also gave writing seminars and lectures on his work at colleges around the country. Albee won Pulitzer Prizes for A Delicate Balance (1966), Seascape (1975), Three Tall Women (1994). Lightly creased with folds, light vertical fold at the end of signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
