EARLY/MID 19TH CENTURY HOUSE & MOTIF SAMPLER BY CAROLINE ELIZABETH HUGHES - 1844:

Early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Caroline Elizabeth Hughes - 1844. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit basket flanked by a floral urn, each with a floral motif beside the urn and a floral motif and bird in flight above their contents. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a charming two storey house with two small birds above its roof, each with a larger bird and blue floral motif beside them. The ground floor of the house has a prancing stag to either side with a tulip, bird and two flowers above them. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral garland containing Caroline Elizabeth\'s name and the date of 1844 with a floral motif and bird to its left and right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep carnation border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby on the top and bottom edges with an area of damage to the top edge, another in the upper right corner and a couple of small areas around the edges. One is able to see through the damage in the upper section that the sampler is sitting on a backing cloth. The sampler isbehind glass soI\'m not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also some minor bleeding to the stitch work of the words. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original mahogany frame with gilt slip. The frame is in fair to good condition with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and a few small losses to the outer edge of the veneer. There is a small loss to the veneer on the upper right corner, a larger loss to the lower left side edge, this edge also a couple of drip marks on it. The 12th & 13th photos show the above mentioned which are not as noticeable as they look in the photos which have been taken under a harsh light.Measures 12 1/2\" across x 13\"(sight size) and 17 3/4\" x 19\"including the frame.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I\'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
