EARLY 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ISADELLA LATTA AGE 11 - May 1st 1831:
$375.00

Early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Isadella Latta aged 11 - 1831. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with four rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern, whilst the middle section contains the following short verse with a crown above and finishing with two sets of family initials, possibly those of Isadella's parents
I ask not riches nor yet length of daysLord give me wisdom to direct my ways * RL MC
The verse is contained within a floral edged triangle with a framed flower in each outer upper corner and a central rose beneath the verse flanked by a floral motif, tree basket and flower, each tree basket with two birds above. There is a set of family initials in both lower corners of the triangle whilst Isadella's name, her age and the date of May the 1st 1831 run beneath with a set of family initials to their right side. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit tree with a heart with two hearts and a floral urn to each side and a row of three flower baskets below which have the quotation - Let worth not title distinguish us - beneath them. The quotation has a fruit basket and arched blossoming tree to its left and right, each tree with a fruit basket above, then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall, somewhat brown discolouration, slightly darker in places with an area of staining running diagonally through the verse and Isadella's name. There are also a few small areas of damage to the linen and one is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a later, clean backing cloth. The sampler is behind glasssoI'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also some bleeding to the green stitch work of both blossom trees in the lower section of the linen and less so to some of the other green stitching. There is thinning to a few of the alphabet letters and a couple of loose threads in the long stitch work. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century Hogarth style frame, possibly its original, which is in good condition with scratched and scuff marks commensurate with its age. There is a loss to the gilt detailing on the upper right corner and a smaller one to the upper left and lower right corners.
Measures 13" x 16 1/4" (sight size) and 15 1/2" x 18 3/4" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING. I AM HAPPY TO COMBINE POSTAGE ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES.PLEASE NOTE - THIS ITEM IS LOCATED IN THE UK BUT CAN BE SHIPPED TO THE LOCATIONS TICKED IN THE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING SECTION.
SHIPPING WILL BE VIA FEDEX OR PARCELFORCE - FULLY TRACKED DELIVERY TO THE USA WITHIN FIVE WORKING DAYS.PLEASE NOTE - I WILL DOUBLE TAPE THE GLASS & PACK THE SAMPLER EXTREMELY WELL, BUT DUE TO ITS SIZE I CANNOT GUARANTEE AGAINST THE POSSIBILITY OF THE GLASS BEING DAMAGED DURING TRANSIT. IF THE BUYER WOULD PREFER FOR IT TO BE REMOVED, I AM HAPPY TO DO SO.
