EARLY 19TH CENTURY HOUSE, PONY & TRAP & RURAL SCENES SAMPLER BY ELLEN ADAMS 1838:

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ellen Adams - 1838. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout.The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket with men hunting with their dogs in a rural landscape to the left and a blossom branch, floral motif, tree and crown to the right. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a charming scene of a house nestled amongst trees with a birdcage to its right with a flower basket above and a butterfly and man working in the garden to its left with a bird on a blossom branch flanked by a crown above him. Ellen\'s name and the date of 1838 are contained centrally within the lower section of the linen with a man and his wife riding in a pony and trap to the left and a walled garden to the right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, paler around the edges and darker to the field from where the sampler is over a stretcher. The sampler is behind glass so I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original substantial mahogany frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the slip retaining much of its original gilding and the frame with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and some old losses to the outer edges of the veneer.
PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large piece measuring 18 1/4\" x 18 1/4\" (sight size) & 24\" x 24\" including the frame.
I AM ALSO SELLING ANOTHER SAMPLER WHICH I ACQUIRED AT THE SAME TIME AS ELLEN\'S WHICH IS BY LYDIA ADAMS AND FINISHED IN 1829. WITH BOTH PIECES BEING TOGETHER, HAVING SOME SIMILAR MOTIFS AND THE GIRLS SHARING THE SAME SURNAME, I THINK IT IS LIKELY THEY WERE SISTERS.
