Eugene R. Durkee, the man behind the name, began his business in Buffalo, New York, around 1850. Initially, he dealt with various products, including drugs, medicines, perfumery, and even leeches! Durkee’s Venetian Liquid Hair Dye, Vermifuge, and Baking Powder were some of the specific items associated with his name during this period1.
In 1858, Eugene R. Durkee relocated his business to Brooklyn, partnering with George G. Haven to form E.R. Durkee & Co.. They operated from a five-story building on Sedgwick Street. Later, Zina Case replaced Haven as a partner. The company focused on spices and extracts, which were often used for salad dressings.
Interestingly, in 1929, the Glidden Co. acquired E.R. Durkee & Co. for a whopping $1,800,000. The company continued its legacy, and while the factory moved to Elmhurst (Long Island), the main office remained in New York ITEMS ARE SHIPPED VIA UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE
