Derby Porcelain Amphora Vase Paris & Oenone Lambert King St. Works antique 19thC:
$183.29

An antique nineteenth century classical amphora shaped porcelain vase that has been beautifully hand painted in polychrome enamel colours on the front with a classical Greek clad pair of lovers. She is kneeling on the ground holding a spaniel or hound dog whilst he appears to be carving initials into the tree that they are under. The scene is after a Francesco Bartolozzi engraving of an Angelica Kaufmann 18th century original.

The couple are named on the back of the vase in a burnished gilded laurel leaf clad scroll - Paris and Oenone. In Greek Mythology the Trojan prince Paris married the prophetic nymph Oenone, who foretold the dire consequences for Paris of his pursuit of the beautiful Helen of Sparta, wife of King Menelaus. Paris left Oenone and abducted Helen and took her to Troy - an act which sparked the Trojan wars.

The vase is a wide bodied footed Nolan amphora shape with twin handles extending from the shoulder to the top of the sides of the long neck. The neck, foot and shaped everted rim all have grey enamel and gilded decoration of heart shapes, bands and anthemion or palmettes. The gilded loop handles have anthemion moulded terminals to the bases and a discreet gilded leaf design.

The painted scene to the front of the vase has the artists initials or monogram WL painted to the bottom right corner. We believe these relate to a ceramic artist W. Lambert, possibly a freelance china painter, gilder and decorator. This vase was acquired along with a number of other items decorated by him. These include a pair of vases signed and dated 1870, some William Larcombe period King Street Old Crown Derby China Works vases and some Bishop and Stonier cups and saucers that had obviously been originally purchased in the white and later decorated.

It is possible that W. Lambert may have been related to the notable China Artist George Lambert who worked for the Derby Crown Porcelain Company set up in 1876 by Edward Phillips and William Litherland, this company later became the Royal Crown Derby Company. (Ref 1)

This lovely antique English porcelain vase is made of very white bone china, that was moulded in two halves, we think that it is probably Derby porcelain from the Old Crown Derby China Works in King Street, Derby, Derbyshire, England in the late 19th century circa 1880 during the Sampson Hancock period. Other than the artists monogram there are no other makers marks.

Condition: It is in excellent antique condition with no chips cracks nor restoration however, it has a glaze scratch to the left side of the vase in line with the handle but below the base of the painting. There is a feint discoloured hairline in the glaze to the base of the vase. The glaze has been slightly over fired at the base at the front and back of the foot. There is some minor wear to the gilding. Please see the images.

This is an extremely attractive item for display and perfect for a mantle shelf, side table or a sideboard. Suitable for a Derby porcelain collector, anyone interested in Greek mythology or antique 19th century Victorian period ceramics. Some collectors may describe this antique porcelain amphora vase as a mantle urn.

The vase is
10 inches (25 cm) high
4 3/4 inches (12 cm) body diameter
3 inches (7.6 cm) foot diameter.
It weights 835grammes unpacked
