Title: Woman with Two Books and Bouquet

Date: circa 1850s

Medium: Daguerreotype 1/6th Plate

Size of Image: 3 ¼ x 2 ¾ inches

Condition: Medium tone daguerreotype with small remnant of original tape on back, edges are turned up in a wavy fashion, 4 corners clipped and slightly crimped. Surface shows tarnishing around perimeter, otherwise quite clean with just a hint of scratches where the mat points meet the plate. There are several burgundy spots on and near her hands (possibly just tarnish since it does not show as surface changing). The plate shows no maker’s marks. Preserver is good but delicate and brass mat is quite good. Case is a pressed leather flower motif with separated hinge and two hook & eye clasps.

Other: Fine matronly woman in lacy bonnet with her arm resting on a jacquard covered table next to two popular poetry books of the day: “Hemans’ Poetical Works, Boston: Phillips Sampson & Co., 1851,” and “Tupper\'s Complete Poetical Works Tupper, Boston: Phillips Sampson, and Co., 1851.” In addition, there is a small bouquet of flowers with a touch of blue to the petals atop the books. The broach at her throat is touched with gold and there is a hint of pink to the cheeks. Her look is one of mild indifference.
