TWICE-SIGNED FREEFRANK ENVELOPE BY GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR, WHO AT THE TIME WAS SUPREMECOMMANDER OF THE ALIED POWERS IN JAPAN. IN THE FALL OF 1947, AT THETIME OF THIS TWICE-SIGNED ENVELOPE, IN ANTICIPATION OF THE UPCOMING 1948PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, HE WAS PUSHING FOR A SIGNED PEACE TREATY WITH JAPAN, WHICHWOULD HAVE ALLOWED HIM TO RETIRE FROM THE SERVICE ON A HIGH NOTE, AND THEN RUNFOR PRESIDNENT OF THE UNITED STATES. BUT PRESIDENT TRUMAN AND GENERALEISENHOWER SCHEMED TO DELAY THE SIGNING OF THE JAPANESE PEACE TREATY TO THWARTMACARTHUR’S PLANS.
