Two album leaves signed by father and son
Signatures: \"Douglas Fairbanks Jr\" and \"Douglas Fairbanks\", 3¼x2 blue leaf with Douglas Fairbanks, Sr.\'s signature affixed to 6¼x5¼ pink leaf with rounded corners and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.\'s signature. Larger leaf has numerous black ink notations in unknown hand and small b/w magazine photos of father and son. Smaller leaf has green ink border drawn in unknown hand. In 1902, DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS, SR. (1883-1939, born Douglas Elton Ulman in Denver, Colorado) made his Broadway debut in Her Lord and Master. He married Anna Beth Sully, the daughter of an industrialist, in 1907, and left acting to work for her father\'s soap company. When his father-in-law lost his fortune in 1908, Fairbanks Sr. returned to the theatre. His son and namesake, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., was born the following year, and in 1915, the family moved to Hollywood. During a World War I Liberty Bond tour with Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford, Fairbanks fell in love with \"America\'s Sweetheart.\" Having divorced Anna in 1918, Fairbanks Sr. married Pickford in 1920, and the couple settled in their Hollywood mansion, Pickfair. They reached the peaks of their careers in the 1920s. Pickford and Fairbanks separated in 1933, the year Pickford retired from acting. After their divorce in 1936, Fairbanks Sr. also retired. At the age of 13, he starred in Lasky\'s Stephen Steps Out, an unsuccessful attempt to exploit the Fairbanks name. Douglas Fairbanks Sr. took little interest in his son\'s career. The two did not become close friends until the early 1930s. In 1939, Douglas Fairbanks Sr. died in his sleep from a heart attack at the age of 56; his son was then 30 years old. Fairbanks often replicated his father\'s swashbuckling in such films as The Prisoner of Zenda (1937) and Sinbad the Sailor (1947). But he was an accomplished actor who proved himself on stage and film, including a starring role in the now-classic Gunga Din (1939). Lightly toned, soiled, creased and rippled. Larger leaf was torn from album on left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.See more material from these signers:DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS SR. DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS JR.
