D.W. Griffith came to Mamaroneck in 1919, the success of ''Birth of a Nation'' and ''Intolerance'' already behind him. He bought the 28-acre Flagler estate the railroad and hotel leader on Orienta Point and, working with a company of actors that included Lillian and Dorothy Gish, filmed several of his most important movies.Among those were ''Way Down East,'' a melodrama about a jilted unwed mother, played by Lillian Gish, and ''Orphans of the Storm,'' an epic story set during the French Revolution. To film ''Orphans,'' an elaborate costume drama starring the Gish sisters, Griffith re-created 18th-century Paris on Satan's Toe and used hundreds of residents as extras. In those days the area was less the “East Coast Hollywood” than Hollywood was “the West Coast Mamaroneck.” The town boasted a distinction to which few communities could lay claim: a silent‐screen‐era movie studio. The studio built by Mr. Griffith, the most significant American director in pre‐sound films, attracted such stars as Carol Dempster, Richard Barthelmess and Dorothy and Lillian Gish.Mr. Griffith himself lived on the studio site in a modest cottage. Before Mr. Griffith took over the area for the complex, which was completed in 1919. Before finding the site, Mr. Griffith had been looking for an alternative to shooting exteriors on California locations, having long since fled his Biograph Studios on 19th Street in Manhattan. Mamaroneck seemed the perfect alternative.

Lillian Diana Gish(b.1893-d.1993) was an American actress. Her film-acting career spanned 75 years, from 1912, in silent film shorts, to 1987. Gish was called the "First Lady of American Cinema", and is credited with pioneering fundamental film performance techniques. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Gish as the 17th greatest female movie star of Classic Hollywood cinema. Having acted on stage with her sister as a child, Gish was a prominent film star from 1912 into the 1920s, being particularly associated with the films of director D. W. Griffith. This included her leading role in the highest-grossing film of the silent era, Griffith's The Birth of a Nation (1915). Her other major films and performances from the silent era are: Intolerance (1916), Broken Blossoms (1919), Way Down East (1920), Orphans of the Storm (1921), La Bohème (1926), and The Wind (1928).
