Small tear at top of page 91. Pages 80 -95 show indentation from some item that was between pages, more evident from pages 88-94. (please see photo). Speedy is an Irish pony, bought out of a tinker\'s string. She has “wise courage and speed and jumping power.” Rainbow is her chestnut filly, sired by a chestnut racehorse stallion who won many races. Rainbow and Speedy are proudly owned by Oonagh and her family, who have a farm in Ireland.This is a wonderful story, in the best tradition of “Pony Books”. The author knows horses and ponies exceedingly well—the descriptions of Rainbow as a just weaned foal and her pony companion Dinah are excellent—Dinah is fat and bossy and rules the roost! In addition to Rainbow, there\'s her full brother Seafire, a rich dark brown with the same star and white foot as his sister, he is proud and independent and fancy and elegant. There\'s also the older brother, Rocket, who is a big, ungainly but friendly bay.The story starts with childhood friend John Wainright coming to stay to recover from a stay in the hospital and to learn farming. Oonagh teaches him to ride on Speedy, while Rocket is started under saddle by Barney. John graduates to jumping and enters a show, along with Rocket. When a riding accident occurs, John shows his mettle.Highly recommend to anyone who likes Pony Books or who is interested in horses! This book is illustrated by the incomparable Lionel Edwards to boot!
