Nicely presented 6-1/2\" x 7-3/4” partly printed invoice document on laid paper watermarked “1808” with beautiful calligraphy from the firm of \"John, James & Robert Mangles” who were “SHIP-CHANDLERS, OIL-MEN, & MANUFACTURERS OF PAINTERS’ COLOURS.” Light fold marks, slight aging. Billhead reads “272. Wappin, London; And at their Sufferance Wharf, Kings Mills, Rotherhithe” and “Guns, Shot, Gunpowder, Small Arms, & Kentledge.” In manuscript handwriting dated 10 November 1809, \"Landing & Waterage Barrel Gunpowder from Ship to Magazine, 3 Barrels F Gunpowder & half Barrells, Waterage the whole to Gravesend.\" On account of Mr. Samuel Allen and signed “Settled in Acct- S. Allen.

Robert Mangles (1731-1788) of London was of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and had sons John (1760-1837) and James (1786-1839).About 1750, Robert went to London and set up as a ships’ chandler. Kent\'s Directory for the Year 1794 notes Mangles John & James, Oilmen & Ship-chandlers, 272, Wapping. Shipowner John Mangles was a Whip MP for Guildford, an East India proprietor and a director of the East India Company. Brother James Mangles was a Captain in the Royal Navy and a MP for Woodbridge. The brothers owned convict ships as early as 1799 and were involved in the colonization of Western Australia where on that coast is located Mangles Bay. The Mangles family operated convict shipping services to India until at least 1842. James’ daughter Ellen was married to the Governor of Western Australia James Stirling. Pioneering botanist Georgiana Molloy (1805-1843) named a newly identified plant species manglesii in honor of Lady Stirling’s cousin, retired Royal Navy Captain John Mangles.
