Civil War Wallet Id\'d to Capt. Anderson, 81st N.Y. Vols.:
$95.00

CIVIL WAR WALLET Identified to Capt. Hugh Anderson, 81st New York Volunteers.
Wallet is the typical Civil War-era style closed with a wraparound leather strap passing through a keeper. Interior has multiple compartments, including one with a flap labeled \"Bill / Notes.\" Wallet is is exceptionally nice condition. Leather is soft and supple, with only light wear and many tiny scratches consistent with age and use.
The top of wallet\'s interior is nicely inscribed in 19th- Century script \"H. B Anderson.\" The inscription is easily legible, especially if wallet is held up to light at the proper angle.
The wallet came a small scrap of paper on which is written \"Hugh Anderson, mother\'s uncle / served in the 81st Regiment during the Civil War.\"
Hugh Anderson (1839-1911) enlisted on 25 August 1861 at age 22 in Oswego, N.Y. He was commissioned as 2nd Lt., Co. B, 81st N.Y. on 14 Sept. 1861, and promoted to 1st Lt. on 20 Dec. 1861. On 27 July 1862, he was promoted to Captain and transferred to Co. G, 81st N.Y. Vols. He was wounded at Cold Harbor 3 June 1864. He was mustered out at Elmira, N.Y. 22 Dec. 1864.
Curiously, all references found on Ancestry to Anderson are to simply \"Hugh Anderson,\" without any middle initial. However, I found no other potential matches for a \"Hugh B. Anderson.\" Also, I confirmed that he had one niece (his sister\'s daughter), who I assume is the \"mother\'s uncle\" referred to in the note.
Although the ID to Capt. Anderson appears solid, it is impossible to know the extent, if any, to which he actually carried it during the war.
