Civil War Union Belgian Import Mle 1842 Sword Bayonet M1842 Rifle Original PDL:

This very rare Model 1842 Saber Bayonet is a copy of the French Model 1840, but with a "cock's comb" upper finial on the muzzle-ring and a slightly longer blade (22 1/2" vs. 20. 14" on the Model 1840). Steel, single-edged, fullered (both sides), with a re-curved or "yataghan-shape" blade.

The blade is in decent condition with some beautiful patina that says it’s been there and done that. condition, mostly grey with areas of dark staining/ patina - it has slight dings dents scratches, but it does exist, and the button does work as it’s supposed to. as you can see the tip of the Bayonet has been minimally Rolled/ Blunted ever so slightly-referred to the photos regarding the tip . solid Bayonet no wobble. Everything is solid and well built! Many countries, including the United States, Belgium, and Germany, copied and used these bayonets. On the lower quillion, there is a Crown over "R" mark. The saber bears the markings of PDL, which stands for Peter Daniel Lunescloss (exceptional maker of Tiffany, swords) from Sollingen, a well-known manufacturer from Solingen, the German “ city of the blades''.This bayonet has a brass grip on the right side with a spring steel latching arrangement and a button on the left. The US Imported lots of swords, enlisted men and Officers from Solingen as well as France and England.

Overall length of the bayonet is approximately 27 1/2 inches, with an approximate 22 1/2 inch "Yataghan '' style saber blade. This term is derived from the Turkish word for "one who lays down," to describe the downard-sweeping double-curve blade profile. The double-curve added strength and rigidity, while keeping the hilt and point in alignment

for thrusting efficiency. It features the ribbed brass handle and leaf spring attachment later used on the M1866 bayonet for the Chassepot Rifle.
