Offered is an antique 1800’s doctor/surgical tool marked; “Proctor”.It has brass outside covers and 5 foldingmedal shafts. 4 blades have various size ‘cutting’ points or edges. (one ismissing the cutting point) The fifth blade is a straight, sharpened knife edgedshaft. These 1800 medical bleeders were used by doctors before science haddiscovered that removing blood from patients was not beneficial for curingillnesses. CONDITION – This antique toolis original and in ‘as found’ condition. It has tarnish and soiling and is wornsmooth. Careful restoration may improve the appearance. As mentioned, one bleeder shaft is missing the point with the cuttingedge. F.Y.I. December 13, 1799, George Washingtonwas a proponent of bloodletting. While ill, he asked to be bled and physiciansdrained an estimated 5 to 7 pints in less than 16 hours.Washington died the next day, leading to speculation thatexcessive blood loss may have contributed to his demise.
