This letter is addressed to Charlemagne Tower, April 18, 1809-July 25, 1884, an American lawyer and businessman in the Schuylkill Valley, PA and served as an officer for coal and railroad companies. He organized and led a company of Union soldiers from Pottsville in a 3 month enlistment during the Civil War, when he was commissioned captain. Towers company consisted of some 270 recruits from the Schuylkill Valley. The unit was commonly referred to as the "Tower Guards" and were created as Company H of the 6th PA regiment. This was then attached to a brigade commanded by Majo General Robert Patterson. On April 18, 1863 he was appointed Provost Marshal for Schuylkill County and assumed the very unpopular duty of conscripting men for the Civil War. He played a role in the characterization of Irish Catholic Miners as "Molly Maguires:. In January 1864 a military commision was convened to try the group called "Buckshots" who were convicted of trying to block through violent means, the implementation of the draft in Schuylkill County. Another name given to the "Buckshoys" was "Molly Maguires" named by C. Tower, legal representative of coal companies and responsible for recruitment of miners for the military. This letter is sent in March, the month of the trial and conviction, and is sent from the town of Audenreid, where the "Buckshots" got their start.
