CIVIL WAR CAVALRY BLACK LEATHER MARTINGALE WITH BRASS HEART BREAST PLATE and BRASS HOOK ATTACHMENTS (Reproduction)
This is an Excellent Condition Black Leather Cavalry Martingale sewn with period type waxed white thread. It was purchased by me over 25 years ago from a Cavalry Sutler to use in a movie production. It has a large Brass Heart Breast Plate and easy to attach to your saddle and girth strap, Brass Pinch Hooks (See Photos). These were primarily used by Federal Cavalry Regiments, but also used by CSA Cavalry Regiments. The purpose other than Cavalry Horse Decoration was to secure the McClellan Saddle to the Horse during long Patrol Rides or Cavalry Charges. It also has a steel ring on the top of the Breast Plate. This was used to attach a black leather strap between the Breast Plate and the Horse\'s Halter Ring, if he was a bad head tosser. The Brass Heart has been recently polished with Brasso and the leather conditioned with Lexol. This Martingale was worn by my horse during the battle scenes in the 1999 Civil War Cavalry Movie, \"Ride With The Devil\", starring Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, Jeffrey Wright and Jewel. So, it is movie tack equipment memorabilia.
