Chicago, ILLINOIS - Hotel Pershing & Bar - MULTIVIEW - 1948 - ADVERTISING: The Pershing had three music venues: a lounge, a ballroom and a street-level nightclub. The club was once known as Birdland until Morris Levy, owner of the Birdland in New York City, threatened to sue, at which point the Chicago version changed its name to Budland (some say at the behest of pianist Sun Ra). From its opening, the hotel was connected to the city\'s crime syndicate; the ballroom was first operated by bootlegger Al Tierney, who had previously run the establishment that became the Plantation Cafe (35th & Calumet). Later controlled by the Capone/Torrio gang, the hotel was \'turned over to black\' after it was used as housing for GIs; its postwar owners also ran the DuSable Hotel at Oakwood and Drexel. Before finding fame as a disk jockey and being discovered by Dave Garroway, Holmes \'Daddy-O\' Daylie worked in the lounge as a bartender. Ahmad Jamal recorded his hit version of \'Poinciana\' here in 1958, but the hotel had seen better days long before that. It subsequently closed and reopened numerous times, including once being owned by Lorraine Hansberry, who paid $350,000 for it in 1960 and briefly renamed it the Nan-Carl Hotel (after her parents). The Hotel closed in the late 1970s and was demolished in the 1980s. This Linen Era Advertising Postcard, published in 1948, promotes the hotel as having \"200 Newly Decorated and Refurnished Rooms and Suites, all with Private Bath.
