Charleston Chapter, National Railway Historical Society; April 1968 Train Excurs:
$9.95

The Charleston Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) was established in 1967. It operates the Best Friend Train Museum where a full size replica of this pioneering steam engine is housed. Operating over a six-mile wood and metal track, the Best Friend, on Christmas Day 1830, established the nation's first successful scheduled passenger service. The Best Friend's feat gave rise to the chapter's motto: "Cradle of Railroading." The organization holds monthly meetings and publishes The Best Friend Newsletter. In September 1969 it purchased a steam locomotive for $15,000. Restoring it became a major fundraising and work project. Initially parked in the Southern Railway's Charleston rail yard, it is now located at the South Carolina Railroad Museum in Winnsboro, SC. The Charleston Chapter was the founder of this museum and furnished much of the rolling stock. In April 1970 the chapter, in conjunction with the Southern Railway, built a float to hold a replica of the Best Friend for the opening day parade celebrating South Carolina'sTricentennial. The float held the engine, which was under a full head of steam, crew, and a full load of passengers. It was constructed to elevate the engine's wheels which turned at slow speed to show the motion of the side rods and valve gear. The float weighed 41 tons and was 80 feet in length and was reported to be the longest float ever entered in a street parade in South Carolina, as well as probably the heaviest. In honor of South Carolina's Tricentennial, the 1970 annual meeting of the NRHS was held over Labor Day weekend in Charleston. The Charleston Chapter of the NRHS, like those throughout the nation, held periodic steam locomotive excursions. Offered for sale is the Advertisement for one scheduled for Sunday, April 21, 1968. These were festive occasions. Minimal wear; very good.
