Description

Cdv of Union General Innis Palmer. It appears to be a dead letter office image. Wear as shown in the photographs.Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Buffalo, New York, where he received common school education; he then entered West Point, graduating 38th of 59 in the class of 1846. He went directly from the classroom to the battlefields of the Mexican War, seeing action at Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Churubusco, and Chapultepec. In the last battle he was wounded and received the brevet of Captain for gallantry. After the war, he served in numerous garrisons, most of them on the frontier; by April 1861 he was a Major in the 2nd United States Cavalry. Early in the Civil War, he was stationed in the defenses of Washington. He then took command of a battalion of Regular cavalry, which he led at First Bull Run. This turned out to be the only Union cavalry on the field at First Bull Run. In that battle he won the brevet of Lieutenant Colonel and on September 23, 1861, was raised to Brigadier General of Volunteers. In March of the following year he was assigned an infantry brigade in the IV Corps/Army of the Potomac, which fought under him on the Virginia peninsula. Though never demonstrating brilliance, he served competently at Williamsburg, Seven Pines, White Oak Swamp, and Malvern Hill. Following the Seven Days\' Campaign, he gave up field service to help organize volunteer regiments in New Jersey and Delaware and to superintend the draft center in Philadelphia. From December 1862 until summer 1865, he served in North Carolina. By mid-July 1863 he was in command of the XVIII Corps, and at intervals between August 1863 and January 1864 he commanded troops occupying coastal garrisons. Thereafter he headed administrative commands, including the strategic mini-district of New Bern. Early in March 1865 he returned to the field at the head of a division under Major General Jacob D. Cox, which near Kingston helped defeat a Confederate force under General Braxton Bragg and Major General Robert F. Hoke. This success secured a base of supplies for Major General William T. Sherman during the Carolinas Campaign. The end of the war found him a brevet Major General of Volunteers and a brevet Brigadier General of Regulars. He was mustered out of the volunteers on January 15, 1866, but remained in the army rising to Colonel of the 2nd Cavalry in June 1868. He left the service at that rank 11 years later after spending his final 3 years of army service on sick leave. He then spent an additional 21 years in retirement, before dying in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
