Time that Meteorite hit the Earth: 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. Location: Campo del Cielo, Gran Chaco Gualamba, Argentina, about 500 miles north-northwest of Buenos Aries.
A Spanish governor learned of the iron from the natives who reportedly believed that it had fallen from the heavens. The governor sent an expedition under the command of Captain de Miraval who returned with a couple pieces of a large iron mass he called Meson de Fierro (large table of iron). The location of the find was the Campo del Cielo(field of the sky or heaven),a fitting name for the location of the meteorite. Since the natives believed that the iron pieces fell from the heavens, the name was suitable for the meteorites. The area that the meteorites are found is an open brush covered plain with very little water and no other rocks. An excellent place to be able to locate meteorites. Campo del Cielo meteorites are described as polycrystalline course octahedrite.
