Long, long ago, when the world was young; when the mountains thrust up like the bones of the Earth and were, as yet, unworn; two friends happened to meet on the grassy plains.

Chief Winter Sun, son of Chief Yellow Rock and Crying Woman, who was one of the first men, was out hunting when he came across one of the Great Wolves from the Greyfur Pack. This particular wolf, cub of Howl That Shakes The Heavens and his wife Steps Softly was named...Hank. Yeah, I don't get it either.

Chief Winter Sun asked Hank if he would care to share his camp and food. Hank agreed and provided some meat of his own as a guest should. After the meal, Winter Sun opened his pack and pulled out a bottle of Night Train and offered Hank a snort. This was many years before Nancy Regan prodded Ronald to pass the National Drinking Age Act, which doesn't apply to talking wolves anyway so don't get your panties in a twist. One drink lead to another and soon there were several bottles lying around. Another Night Train, a bottle of Thunderbird, and even some Mad Dog 20/20. In short, they were * wrecked *.

As so often happens with drunks, they got to bragging about their accomplishments. Winter Sun was boasting that he could outrun anyone in his village. Which was true. He claimed that he could outrun anything. Which was not. He bet Hank that he could beat him in a race to Smoking Mountain, which was a little ways away. Hank reminded Winter Sun that he was the fastest in the Greyfur Pack, a pack noted for swiftness. Winter Sun was adamant that they should race.

Hank agreed on the condition that Winter Sun should have a head start as he only had two legs to Hank's four. Winter Sun agreed to run halfway to Smoking Mountain before Hank started as a gesture of fairness on Hank's part.

Winter Sun stretched, wished Hank fortune in the race, and ran towards Smoking Mountain. (Full disclaimer, he only had to stop and puke twice before the halfway point)

When Winter Sun reached the halfway mark, Hank took off and ran like never before! He planned to pass his friend just before the finish so as not to beat him too badly. Wolves are considerate like that. The trouble was that he wasn't sure whether to pass Winter Sun on the right or on the left since, by this time he was seeing two of them.

Sad to say, Hank picked wrong and plowed into Winter Sun, which splattered him across Hank's chest like a bug on a windshield. Which explains the coloration. And also why wolves howl. That shit hurt!
