On onehalf of the matrix is a nice grouping of transparent colorless flattenedrhombohedral calcite crystals, up to 3 cm in size. In some areas, they are soclear with crystallineplanes within thatexhibit double refractionwhich allows light toflow through and you can even catch a rainbow or two at certain angles in thepictures. A 2-in-1 specimenwith nice combination, luster, shape and form. The transparent calcites alsopenetrate through the matrix at the base, giving it a nice sparkling look.

Some very minor abrasionsover the edges and tips but overall, very appealing. It displays and shows well. Such pleasing qualities, with good shape, luster, transparency, crystal formation habits and structure certainly makethis specimen worthy as an addition to any mineral collection! Specimen Backgroundinformation:

Calcite in general belongsto the calcite group of minerals and are composed of calcium carbonate, sometimes with impurities of iron, magnesium, or manganese, andoccasionally zinc and cobalt. They occur in a great variety of shapes andcolors, and often constitute a major portion of many of the earth\'s rocks.Colors range from colorless to white, yellow, brown, orange, pink, red, purple, blue, green, gray, black or even multicolored. The calcite crystals can be transparentto opaque. Crystals may betabular, acicular, prismatic, flaky, and needle-like. May occur as bundles of scalenohedrons, intergrownrhombohedrons, hair-like masses of acicular crystals, grainy, stalactitic, fibrous, massive, and earthy. Scalenohedral twinning is common. The Calcites inthis featured specimen are transparent and colorless, and primarilyrhombohedral.

Dolomite is composedof calcium magnesium carbonate. Dolomite forms in a different crystal class, differing from the Calcite group minerals. This can be noted by the fact thatDolomite generally forms more elongated crystals than those of the Calcitegroup and they have a hexagonal crystal system. The colors of Dolomite rangefrom colorless, to white, gray, peach, pink, yellow, and orange. They arecommon in groups of small rhombohedral crystals, often with curved, saddle-likefaces. They can also be prismatic, although usually slightly curved. The colorof the dolomite crystals in this featured specimen is light pink and they aresaddle shaped.
